McVicker, The Flanders Group Establish Excellence in Coaching Award

Through his pledge of $25,000 to Building on Success: The Campaign for Monroe Community College, Chris McVicker, president and CEO of The Flanders Group in Pittsford, N.Y., has helped establish the Murph Shapiro Excellence in Coaching Award at Monroe Community College. This is one of several initiatives McVicker has helped start within MCC Athletics—the first being the Pete Pavia Basketball Scholarship established in 1992.

The 24 members of The Flanders Group provide insurance and workers’ compensation safety groups for real estate owners and managers, marina operators and boat dealers, nursery/landscape/horticulture industries, RV dealers and non-franchised auto dealers, machine shop and metal workers, and refuse haulers and recyclers to clients on a statewide basis. It is consistently ranked among the top performers among insurance agencies and has been recognized five times as one of “Rochester’s Top 100” fastest growing, privately held companies.

“I’m the type of individual who likes to see donations manifest into something specific,” said McVicker, who is also a former MCC Foundation director and a good friend of MCC Athletics Director Bruce “Murph” Shapiro. “Before Murph retires, I wanted to personally be at the forefront of recognizing him for his efforts.”

Known for his personal achievements and those of his coaches and players, Shapiro was named the 2002 Junior Community College Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. He also is a member of the Frontier Field Walk of Fame, the MCC Athletic Hall of Fame and the Jewish Hall of Fame.

“A successful manager puts the best person in the job,” said McVicker. “Murph is the one who brought excellent coaches to MCC and those coaches attract champion athletes…. [MCC] is a force to be reckoned with within the NJCAA.”

The award will be presented to one recipient each year. To be considered for the coaching award, a coach and his or her team must meet the following requirements:

*Recognized for outstanding achievement in coaching
*Consistently demonstrated good sportsmanship
*Achieved exceptional results from year to year during season and post-season competition
*Demonstrated achievement in academics
*Involved with community service or helped with outside programs on campus

Monies may be used by the recipient coach toward equipment purchases, team travel and scholarship assistance.
