President's Wednesday Message

Last year, I asked the Shared Leadership Coordinating Council (SLCC) to provide my office with recommendations that would improve MCC's employee search and recruitment practices. The council has provided a comprehensive list of suggestions, which the College will be acting on in the coming year. One of these is fairly obvious but also too easily overlooked: create materials, including web pages, that promote the value and benefits of coming to our community.

The SLCC is not alone in finding that we do not always do the best job of promoting Rochester as a great place to be. Yet there are so many reasons why we should. Recently, MCC Alumni Hall of Fame member and Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce CEO Bob Duffy shared the comment of a local business leader who told him that Rochester was one of the most difficult places to get people to relocate to for work ... and then one of the most difficult places to get them to leave once they have discovered all it offers.

That conversation is one reason why the Chamber has created a new book--We #ROC: 100 Reasons to Love the Rochester/Finger Lakes Region. MCC shows up as the #3 reason under "Scholar Powered" for serving "as a catalyst for innovation, economic development, lifelong learning, and civic engagement." While the 100 in the book are a great starting point, this list can grow much longer--and should. Earlier this week, I had a first row seat to the importance of talking up Rochester when I was invited to a meeting with national site selectors, professionals who work with companies seeking to expand or relocate. Our goal was to "sell" them on our region: to make sure we were on their mind and on their lists when they talked with companies about potential locations. It was heartening and exciting to see how quickly our small and diverse group of Rochesterians came together around what makes our community special. The site selectors were surprised ... and impressed.

So, show your hometown pride. If you were recruiting a new MCC employee to Rochester, what would you share about our community? You can email your responses to me or post them to the comments section on the blog.

Thank you!
