MCC’s Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project will host its 8th annual 5K Walk for Water to support Water for South Sudan on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 10 am at the Stabins Physical Education Complex on MCC’s Brighton Campus, 1000 East Henrietta Road (Lot G). The students’ goal is to raise $5,000 to help Water for South Sudan purchase a new drilling rig in order to provide clean drinking water to and improve the lives of South Sudanese villagers.
The registration fee is $5 prior to Oct. 3 and $7 at the door. Prizes will be awarded to top fundraisers. The event will also feature a silent auction and refreshments. Donations are also accepted online.
Water for South Sudan was founded by Salva Dut, an MCC Alumni Hall of Fame member who graduated from the college in 2000 and lives in South Sudan. The organization has built 259 wells to date, enabling more than 500,000 South Sudanese villagers to thrive, establish schools and develop centers of commerce. Since 2006, MCC students and community supporters have raised nearly $60,000 for Water for South Sudan. It costs $15,000 to drill and build a new well.
Established in 1990, the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project is MCC's unique organization for telling the stories of the Holocaust and other genocides while transforming individuals to become advocates for human rights.
