WXXI News Reports on New Machining Program, Jobs Outlook

WXXI News and several NPR stations across upstate New York aired a report on Monday (May 27) about MCC's new accelerated precision machining certificate program in association with a $14.6 million federal grant awarded to the SUNY network of community colleges last year.

Reporter Kate O'Connell interviewed Ross Micali, MCC project coordinator, and Kevin Kelley, executive director of Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association, as well as two program participants.

Eric Roth and Jim Alderman are among 15 displaced workers and military veterans pursuing a precision machining certificate from MCC. They are on track to earn their credential in six months, instead of the usual one year. Because of the generous financial support from RTMA, participants receive education and hands-on training at no cost at the Applied Technologies Center. Upon completing the program, they will receive job placement assistance from RTMA and have the opportunity to continue their education in the future toward an associate degree in machining.

The accelerated program, which began May 6 and continues through Oct. 11, was designed in response to the advanced manufacturing industry's immediate need for skilled workers.
