Associate Professor of English Cathryn Smith decided to inject a little creative speaking into her online Creative Writing course. Last spring, Prof. Smith was awarded an Online Development Stipend from the Curriculum Office for her summer project which she called, “Talking Heads.” Cathryn recorded and imported some 30 audio files into her Creative Writing class in an effort to engage different learning styles and to enliven the online classroom experience. This fall, she is incorporating audio responses into her evaluation of student essays. She says, “If this new addition to my online course proves successful, I plan to teach students to create and upload audio files into group work areas.” That addition, according to Prof. Smith, will help students engage in their critical responses to each others’ writing.
Instructional Development Stipends are made available by the Office of Curriculum and Program Development each summer to sponsor instructional innovation.
