MCC Reaches Agreement on CSEA Contract, Takes Step Towards Wage Equity

At its April 4 meeting, the MCC Board of Trustees unanimously approved the contract between Monroe Community College and the Monroe Community College Employees Unit 7402, Monroe County Local 828, CSEA.

On behalf of MCC Board Chair Allen Williams, Cabinet members and I extend our gratitude to CSEA Unit 7402 President Tom Pollizi (Facilities), Executive Director Kristin Lowe (Human Resources and Organizational Development), and members of the negotiating teams for their work leading up to the final agreement presented on March 2, 2022 and ratified by CSEA members. More than 90 percent of the CSEA members who voted on March 17 voted “yes” in support of the contract. The three-year contract runs September 1, 2021-August 31, 2024.

Through the negotiation process, MCC and CSEA reached another important milestone: a $15 per hour minimum wage for employees. By doing so, we join other “Level Up Champions”* throughout our community in valuing and investing in our employees and doing our part to address poverty in Greater Rochester.

MCC is part of our community’s solution to reducing poverty and eradicating structural racism. According to Economic Policy Institute findings as released by the Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative in 2021, the “typical employee earning less than $15 per hour is a woman over the age of 25 who works full-time, and roughly half are persons of color. If all employers in New York state committed to a $15 per hour starting wage, more than half of all Latino workers and 40% percent of African-American workers would receive a … roughly $4,800 per year raise.”

Thank you to all who negotiated, voted, and supported this important process. Congratulations on your success and for inspiring from the inside out!
