MCC's NSBE Jr. Chapter Sweeps Awards at the 2009 Summer Camping Conference


Last weekend 28 students (grades 7-12) and 9 chaperones spent the weekend at Syracuse University for the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Summer Camping Conference. 

The theme of the conference was “Inspiring Change to Strike and Impact.”  Run by college-level NSBE members, the conference focused on showing students how their technical growth, personal growth, and growth within NSBE can lead to a lasting impact on the world.  It demonstrated how NSBE can be a springboard to success through science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.  Workshops were designed to promote technical excellence, academic excellence, and cultural awareness.   Pre-Collegiate youth from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin came together for the event. 

Members of MCC’s NSBE Jr. Chapter surfaced as leaders at the conference – as volunteer participants during workshops, group leaders, and competition winners.  The following students received awards at the closing ceremony:

Roller Coaster Design: 1st place
Julissa Bermudez, Marianette Citron, Malik El-Amin, and Dayla Dyer

Try-Math-A-Lon Quiz Bowl: 1st Place

Professional Attire Workshop: Recognition for Excellence

Bridge Design: 1st Place (in both sessions!)
