Flags at Half-Staff (3/2/09)


Governor David A. Paterson has directed that flags on State government buildings be flown at half-staff on Monday, March 2, 2009, in honor of Burlington Flats, New York resident Army Corporal Michael L. Mayne who was killed in action on Monday, February 23, 2009, in Balad, Iraq.

Corporal Mayne was a member of the 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team. The unit is part of the 25th Infantry Division based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Corporal Mayne and two other soldiers died when they came under small arms fire from insurgents while on patrol.

“All New Yorkers are saddened by the death of this young soldier, and we grieve along with his friends, family, and fellow soldiers,” said Governor Paterson. “We are forever indebted to Corporal Michael Mayne for the sacrifice he has made on behalf of all citizens of the United States. His service will be honored and never forgotten.”

Governor Paterson has directed the flags on all State buildings to be lowered to half-staff in honor and tribute to our State’s service members who are killed in action.
