Dr. Mary Ann M. DeMario's Work Contributes to National Dialogue on Student-Parents

Oregon Student-Parent Taskforce
In the fall, Dr. Mary Ann M. DeMario was invited to serve as an advisor and subject matter expert on the Oregon Student-Parent Taskforce.  The taskforce was created to advise and support Oregon state legislators in crafting policy mandating all Oregon public colleges and universities to collect data on which of their students are Student-Parents.  The bill became law on May 17, 2021 and will be signed by Oregon Governor Kate Brown this week.

National Student Parent Support Symposium at Ohio State University
At the invitation of the Los Angeles Valley Community College District (LACCD), Dr. DeMario presented as part of a panel at the 2021 National Student Parent Support Symposium at Ohio State University.  The session was titled “Disrupting Systems: Re-envisioning Community College Going Forward.”  It was designed to give more insight into the role that deans, presidents, and high-level administration plays in supporting Student-Parents, and the ways they can utilize their leverage to improve student retention and success.  The panel included the President of the LACCD Board of Trustees and the Founder and Director of the Family Resource Center at L.A. Valley College, among others.
