GIST Students Chosen for Water for South Sudan and NYS Dept of Health Mapping Internships!

Congratulations to Joy Subik and Rachel Daningburg for being chosen to participate in summer mapping internships, as recent MCC graduates having completed the GIST (Geospatial Information Science and Technology) Certificate!  These internships have been made possible by collaborative efforts by Professor Jon Little and Adjunct Instructor Wayne Howard as part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technological Education (ATE) grant:  Building a Virtual Geospatial Program at a Community College to meet Workforce Needs.

Joy Subik will be participating in an internship with Water for South Sudan, a group supported by thousands of teachers and students across the globe, all creative, driven, and determined to provide clean water in South Sudan.  Joy will be connecting these teachers to each other and creating a map pinpointing the locations and names of all the schools that have fundraised for WFSS.  Additionally (only accessible with secure access), each pinpoint would list the school name, teacher contact information, photos (if applicable), # of years fundraising for WFSS, amount raised—all of which is information that would only be available to people with secure access.  This project will allow teachers around the world to connect for support, mentoring, sharing of ideas, etc.

Rachel Daningburg will be working with the Bureau of Environmental and Occupational Epidemiology, New York State Dept. of Health. The first aspect of this internship is to compare historical algal bloom data from both chemical tests collected by the DEC, and citizen science reports, with remotely sensed reflectance data related to HABS (harmful agal blooms) in the state of New York. The second aspect is to analyze the locations of CAFOS (Centralized Animal Feeding Operations), karst geography, private wells, and flood zones in relation to water contamination the state of New York. This internship position will include working with partners at the DEC, and EPA, CDC, and Water Supply,.

Congrats, Joy and Rachel!
