National Nurses Week to be Celebrated May 6-12 at MCC

The work of America’s 2.7 million registered nurses to save lives and to maintain the health of millions of individuals is the focus of this year’s National Nurses Week.  “Nurses:  Strength, Commitment, Compassion” is the theme for 2006.  Annually, National Nurses Week begins on May 6, marked as RN recognition Day, and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession.  Traditionally, National Nurses Week is devoted to highlighting the diverse ways in which registered nurses, the largest health care profession, are working to improve health care.  From bedside nursing in hospitals and long-term care facilities to the halls of research institutions, state legislatures, and Congress, the depth and breadth of the nursing profession is meeting the expanding health care needs of American society.

During this week, the Department of Nursing has planned many activities for the MCC Community.  These public events will be held as follows:

·         View the video, “Campaign for Nursing’s Future” to be shown on the plasma screens in the Bausch & Lomb Lobby, and the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center on May 8, 9, and 10 from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm.

·         View the Building 8 display case which features a poster of this year’s Nurses Week theme and the Monroe Community College Graduating Class of December 2005.

·         Visit Building 8, 3rd floor and read student nurses career statements from currently enrolled students displayed on the walls.

Other activities coordinated by the MCC Nursing Department include:

·         Faculty distributing Nurses Week cards to each nursing student in the program.

·         Faculty and students distributing Thank You cards to nurses in all our community affiliating agencies.

·         Nursing students meeting with Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton in the Forum in the Student Center on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 from 11:00 am – 12:00 Noon.
