Student Leader Katie Eberhart Participates in NASA Workshop

Please join the college community in congratulating MCC sophomore Katherine “Katie” Eberhart. Katie is one of 40 select U.S. community college students participating in the National Community College Aerospace Scholars project (NCAS) this week at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., based on her scores in an online NASA course and final project.

The semester-long scholars program culminates with an on-site event at Marshall Space Flight Center and offers students the opportunity to interact with NASA engineers and others as they learn more about careers in science and engineering. While at NASA, students form teams and establish fictional companies interested in Mars exploration. Each team is responsible for developing a prototype rover, designing a 3-D model of their rover and forming a company infrastructure, including budget, communications and presentations.

Upon earning two associate degrees in mechanical engineering and mathematics (anticipated graduation in May 2015), Katie plans to transfer to a four-year engineering program and ultimately pursue a career in aerospace engineering. As an officer of MCC’s Engineering Leadership Council, she is helping to launch a Society of Women Engineers chapter at MCC. The Engineering Leadership Council is a student organization that explores different aspects of engineering fields and connects students to four-year engineering programs and practicing engineers. The group also sponsors and participates in design competitions.

The National Community College Aerospace Scholars is designed to encourage community and junior college students to enter careers in science and engineering. The program is directly tied to NASA's major education goal of attracting and retaining students in STEM disciplines critical to the agency’s future missions.
