ADV 121 Workshop: Choosing the First Mathematics Course

Description: This workshop focuses on the information and tools faculty advisors need to determine the first mathematics course which students should take based on a mathematics placement level and requirements for degree programs. A redesigned and updated advising flowchart is used to share general advice and special tips for various scenarios.

Topics include the following:

·        How to advise LA04 students – Should they take MTH 150, MTH 160, or a course in the algebra/calculus sequence?

·        How to advise first-semester students or undecided students

·        How MTH 099 works

·        How to encourage students who are reluctant to take a non-credit course

·        How to advise students in programs which require either algebra-based or non-algebra-based courses
