MCC STEP Students Shine in Albany and Orlando!

It has been a month of travel for MCC STEP!

Sixteen students, grades 7 through 12, from the MCC Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP) traveled to Albany to participate in the STEP Statewide Student Conference during the last weekend in April.  Two groups from the MCC STEP program presented their independent projects, which involved the construction of a video game dance pad and a comparative analysis of NBA "old" and "new" basketballs, in the student research competition.  All of the conference attendees participated in skill-building workshops and enjoyed the festivities designed to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of STEP in New York State.

During the first week of April, five STEP students travelled to Orlando, Florida to participate in the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) Science Bowl.  Sponsored in part by the Rochester Chapter of NOBCChE, the MCC STEP Science Bowl team held their own against teams from across the country.  In addition to the competition, MCC STEP students enjoyed meeting representatives from colleges and industry, relaxing in the hotel's lazy river, and exploring the Kennedy Space Center, Epcot Center, and the Orlando Science Museum.  The NOBCChE Science Bowl trip was truly an adventure to remember!

The Science & Technology Entry Program is funded in partnership between the New York Department of Education and Monroe Community College.  STEP supports, enriches, and encourages students (grades 7 through 12) from historically underrepresented and underserved groups to pursue college and careers in science, technology, mathematics, health, and the licensed professions.  In addition to travel opportunities, students in STEP benefit from tutoring, Saturday College, field trips, college preparation, and career exposure.  For more information on STEP contact Cindy Kindle: "mailto:ckindle@monroecc.edu" or 262-1524.
