19 Area High Schools to Compete in Annual Engineering Competition


Monroe Community College will host its sixth annual High School Engineering Competition on Thursday, April 24, 2003, 9 a.m to 1 p.m. at the ESL Sports Centre on MCC's Brighton Campus. The Fairport High School team is the defending overall champion.

Over 200 students from 19 area high schools and vocational centers will participate in the event, including Brighton High School, East High School, Eastern Monroe Career Center, Edison Technical and Occupational Education Center, Fairport High School, Finger Lakes Area Vocational Center, Gates Chili High School, Genesee Valley BOCES, Greece Arcadia High School, Hilton High School, Newark High School, Orleans/Niagara BOCES, Orleans Career and Technical Education Center, Pittsford Mendon High School, Pittsford Sutherland High School, Rush-Henrietta High School, Wayne Technical and Career Center, WEMOCO Career and Technical Center, Wilson Magnet High School.

Awards will be presented in three events -- SumoBot, Auto Safety (egg crash) and Wooden Bridge (structural design). A team champion trophy will also be awarded to the school that earns the most points in the three events.

Due to the growth and popularity of the competition, a campus-wide committee was formed to help organize the event. In addition to the Engineering Science and Physics Department, committee members represent the Applied Technologies Center, Workforce Development, Engineering Leadership Council, Baja Club and Future Builders Club.

This event is not open to the general public. MCC faculty, staff and students are welcome to attend, as are parents and guests of the participating students. For more information, please contact MCC's Engineering Science and Physics Department, at x2001.
