Chancellor's Policy for Intersession and the Spring 2021 Semester

This week, Chancellor Dr. Jim Malatras informed us that SUNY continues to operate under a state public health emergency. Campus population density will remain minimized through Intersession and Spring Semester 2021. If federal, state, or local health guidance changes, the SUNY guidance will be updated.

Following are key aspects of the Chancellor's policy. Campus leaders and I will meet this month to ensure adherence to the guidelines and to guarantee academic continuity and quality during Intersession and Spring Semester 2021. SUNY is reviewing MCC's Fall 2020 Departure plan. Approved plans will be posted to our website.

COVID-19 Testing and Monitoring Continues
Our plans will emphasize continued on-campus pooled testing of students and employees, quarantine and isolation protocols, and the College's partnership with the Monroe County Department of Public Health (MCDOPH). Our Fall 2020 Departure plan satisfies SUNY testing requirements prior to and after the Thanksgiving holiday as follows:

  • Student-residents are required to participate in pooled testing on Tuesday, November 17 or Wednesday, November 18 prior to leaving for the Thanksgiving holiday. They are also required to quarantine upon their return to campus and be tested on Tuesday, December 1 or Wednesday, December 2. The MCC Association/Housing and Residence Life will directly communicate requirements and options to student-residents and their families.
  • Students who come to campus for classes, labs or services must participate in pooled testing between Tuesday, November 17 and Wednesday, November 18 (prior to Thanksgiving) and resume regularly scheduled pooled testing on Tuesday, December 8, or present verification of a negative COVID-19 test from an alternate testing site.
  • Employees who are assigned to work on campus or are approved to come to campus must also participate in pooled testing between Tuesday, November 17 and Wednesday, November 18 (prior to Thanksgiving) and resume regularly scheduled pooled testing on Tuesday, December 8, or present verification of a negative COVID-19 test from an alternate testing site.

MCC will continue to report daily COVID-related information to the SUNY COVID-19 Tracker. Please refer to the Chancellor's October 26, 2020 SUNY Mandatory Testing for Fall 2020 Semester Closing Guidance for additional background information.

Intersession and Spring 2021 Semester Terms
Together, through shared governance processes and in collaboration with faculty and staff, MCC must work to ensure that online and remote instruction meets or exceeds expectations of regular and substantive interaction with our students.

  • We must be prepared to execute fully remote plans if the campus meets the threshold for a mandatory pause on in-person instruction.
  • Instruction must be fully online or remote, except for those clinical practicums, research, and applied learning experiences that require physical presence. Please stay tuned for further updates regarding teaching and learning modalities.
  • Students, faculty and staff returning to campus during Intersession and the Spring 2021 semester must present evidence of a negative COVID-19 test before returning to campus. Daily COVID-19 self-assessments and regularly scheduled COVID-19 pooled testing sessions will also continue.

Academic Calendar

  • Spring Break: Given the current risks associated with COVID-19 spread, spring break and any other spring holiday periods will not be permitted. Exceptions to this Spring Break policy will be considered and must be pre-approved by SUNY System Administration.
  • Commencement: Commencement ceremonies will be considered in accordance with guidance from New York state. MCC will begin to plan for a virtual commencement and/or safely distanced methods of recognition and degree and certificate dissemination for our graduates.

MCC's SUNY-approved final plans will be shared with you as soon as possible.
