Rochester AmeriCorps Celebrates Dr. King’s Legacy Through Service

Thirty Rochester AmeriCorps members, staff and friends attended the annual “King for a Day” service day this past Saturday. This community event, organized by Rochester Cares, offers an opportunity for volunteers to honor the memory of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by committing a day to community service. The morning began at the Edgerton Community Center where volunteers listened to keynote speaker Wade Norwood, Jr. and were energized by performances from Roberts Wesleyan SMAC Step Team and poetry from Roc Bottom Slam Team.

For the afternoon, volunteers headed out to 18 various sites over the city to complete a range of service projects. Our AmeriCorps members served at Foodlink sorting donations and learning about creating healthy and hunger-free communities. The day was filled with reflections on service and brought together a wonderful community of caring individuals who are dedicated to serving the public.
