Scholars' Day To Celebrate Students Like Carly Cook

Carly Cook has always been good at science. She temporarily turned her back on that natural aptitude while earning a fine arts degree at Alfred University but she doesn’t regret it. Her Alfred experience was a good one. “I grew a lot; I learned a lot about myself,” she said. For the past few semesters, Carly has been taking MCC science courses with the hope of earning a medical illustration degree from RIT – and she’s been acing them.

On Scholars’ Day, Carly will be presenting on proposed changes to the Common Rule*. In September 2015, 16 federal agencies under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services posted a Notice of Proposed Rule Their goal: to make the protection of human subjects covered under the Common Rule more efficient and effective.

With assistance from sponsoring biology faculty member James Cronmiller, Carly will discuss the underlying factors for the proposed change and broach the question: Is too much responsibility being given to investigators? “I anticipate an interesting discussion,” she said. “There are important ethical questions to consider with this change. It’s really not black and white.”

Carly, who will finish MCC this semester and apply to RIT this coming fall, is proud of herself for making education a priority. “If I could talk to my 18-year-old self, I would have given myself more credit for my academic ability. I would have given myself more confidence. My Plan B is to apply to MCC’s nursing program. The fact that I’m even thinking about being a nurse -- that I’m an A student – that I could do this -- is amazing. There’s a part of me that thinks I would probably have liked to come here first.”

On Saturday, April 23, 10 am – 3 pm, 69 students sponsored by 21 faculty members will participate in MCC's 8th Annual Scholars' Day Program. Please support our students by attending.

* The Common Rule is a rule of ethics regarding biomedical and behavioral research involving human subjects in the United States.
