"With patients in mind, stakeholders join call for BSN in 10"

The perspectives of MCC Department of Nursing Chairperson Laurie Palmer and alumna Megan Scott ’12 were included in the November 7 Rochester Business Journal article “With patients in mind, stakeholders join call for BSN in 10.” The article addresses proposed state legislation that would require new registered nurses to earn a bachelor of science in nursing degree within 10 years of their state licensing.

According to Palmer, the two-year associate degree will continue to be relevant and provide access to nursing education. “MCC is an affordable entry into practice,” she said.

Kathy Rideout, dean and professor of clinical nursing at the University of Rochester School of Nursing, echoed Palmer’s statement: “Nurses do not go to a two-year versus a four-year program because they are not smart enough,” Rideout said. “They can get their two-year degree, start working in a clinical location and then complete their four-year degree. Financially it makes a lot of sense to go to a two-year program first.”

Scott also supports the legislation. She is a nurse in the pediatric unit at Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong and is working towards her BSN at the University of Rochester.
