CSTEP and STEP Students Present at Finger Lakes Region Day of Service

On Saturday, March 4, 2017, three MCC CSTEP students presented their research experience posters at the C/STEP Finger Lakes Region Day of Service. The event was held at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. There were two categories: High School and College.

Sara Llopis (Individual Studies-Science) conducted her research during summer 2016 at Binghamton University. Her research was titled “The Role of D1 and D3 Receptors in L-Dopa Induced Dyskinesia in the Hemiparkinsonian Rat.” Joe Cartella conducted his research at Syracuse University during summer 2016. His research was titled, “Identification of Transcription Factors Playing a Role in the Developmental Programming of the OSM-9 Gene in C.Elegans.” Marla Roberts also conducted her research at Syracuse University during summer 2016. Her research was titled “Analytical Physics Proves Superior Over Newtonian Methods When Evaluating Complex Mechanical Systems.”

Marla Roberts placed first and Joe Cartella placed second at the Finger Lakes Region Day of Service Poster competition.

A group of three middle school (8th grade) students also presented on a project they worked on during the STEP Summer Bridge program in summer 2016. The title of their project was “Powering our Future: Water Turbines as a Source for Renewable Energy." Kalissa Marks, Arianna Marks, and Sierra Fernandez presented on their process for creating a water turbine to produce electricity. Although the poster session was for high school students, these eighth graders were allowed to participate in the poster competition. Kudos to this group as they placed third.

Please join us in congratulating our CSTEP and STEP presenters for a job well done.
