Illusion of Inclusion: A Series on Race in America


Monroe Community College has once again partnered with the YWCA’s annual signature campaign—Stand Against Racism. This campaign is designed to build community among those who support racial justice and to raise awareness about the negative impact of institutional and structural racism.

MCC will hold a weeklong series of events beginning April 21 and running through April 27. We invite you to support this initiative by attending these events as we collectively take a stand in solidarity against all forms of discrimination and oppression.

Day 1: “The Rules of Racism” Tuesday, April 21, 2015 5:30pm—8pm,  Forum in the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center—Brighton Campus

In partnership with the Sociological Film Series, we invite you to a screening of the documentary Hidden Colors III: The Rules of Racism and the origins of White Supremacy. In this powerful film, the notion of race is explored, while the real and untold history of people of color are discussed.

Day 2: Justice or Just Us? Wednesday, April 22, 2015 12pm—1pm, Empire Room—Brighton Campus

Two short presentations offered by MCC Faculty will shed light on the long-standing inequalities within the criminal justice system and the resulting trauma ensued. 

Day 3: MCC Symbolic Stand Against Racism Thursday, April 23, 2015 11:50am—12:20pm, 4th Floor Atrium—Damon City Campus

Join us in taking a stand against all forms of discrimination and oppression.

Day 4: Finding a Way Forward, Friday, April 24, 2015 12pm—1pm, Bldg. 8-200—Brighton Campus

A panel discussion with Mark T. Henderson, Brighton Police Chief, Michael Lopez, Assistant Public Defender, and Melanie Funchess, Mental Health Counselor that will address the state of our communities and police relations.

Day 5: A Moment of Reflection Monday, April 27, 2015 12pm—1pm, Bldg. 11-203—Brighton Campus AND 4th Floor Atrium—Damon City Campus

During concurrent debriefing sessions, attendees will share their take-a-ways regarding this series of events and will have opportunities to discuss how we, as better informed individuals, can move forward to build more inclusive communities.
