Inauguration Community Engagement Projects Make a Difference

Thank you to everyone who supported the community engagement projects leading up to and during the recent inauguration. In addition to creating wonderful memories and experiences for children throughout our community, the participation and generosity of faculty, staff and students has led to a reinforced emphasis on literacy, scholarships and service-learning opportunities for MCC students, and strengthened community partnerships.

Following is a recap of our shared success:

Celebration of Literacy Project
MCC service-learning students enrolled in Performance and Presentation Skills for Teachers (EDU 150), collaborated with second-graders at the World of Inquiry School No. 58 to co-author children’s books and create performances that address New York state curriculum standards. The project culminated in a celebration of literacy at an “Author’s Tea On The Genesee” where the students brought their books to life through performances of their stories for kindergarten classes, their families, and the community, including President Anne Kress. More than 20 books were written, illustrated and produced through this project. Xerox Corporation printed 200 books for donation to local schools and child care centers.

Book and A Blanket Drive
Patricia Braus, executive director of the Rochester Education Foundation, was very appreciative of the 123 blankets and 128 books that were collected during the Book and A Blanket Drive. The MCC Student Nurses Association also donated $150 to the effort to benefit Rochester City School District Pre-K through second-grade students.

Kress Inauguration Run/Walk or Ride
Inauguration day kicked of with 99 people participating in the Kress Inauguration Run/Walk or Ride that began at the Brighton Campus. The event raised $1,147 for the Snowflake Scholarship Fund that was established by the Kress-Davis Family at the MCC Foundation.

Composting Effort
In support of MCC’s commitment to sustainability, inauguration guests received composting tips and information in the form of a bookmark, along with a butterfly with embedded seeds to plant in their home gardens. Event materials, such as flowers, food scraps and paper products generated throughout inauguration day were composted. The total weight composted was 480 lbs, consisting primarily of compostable serving pieces and plate scrapings. Many thanks go to ARAMARK and Cayuga Composters for partnering with MCC in this effort.
