President's Wednesday Message

Welcome to the new academic year! This is one of the busiest weeks in all of our offices and classrooms, so I thank you in advance for taking time to read today’s message.

Those of you who have been around the College for a while will remember the “gold book.” At one time, this small, three-ring binder served as MCC’s source for everything from organizational charts to policies to Faculty Senate by-laws. However, as the years went on, the College stopped updating the “gold book,” which created a challenge in defining, understanding, and implementing a policy framework for MCC decision-making.

To change this picture, multiple offices have been working over the past year to make MCC’s policies visible and accessible to both our internal and external stakeholders. The result of their efforts is the new Policies website. When you visit this site, you will notice several changes to promote communication, transparency, and accountability:

1) MCC policies now follow a standard format in presentation and required content. This template is provided for downloading from the website.
2) Each policy includes a contact office should you have questions.
3) Any procedure associated with a policy is also linked from this site.
4) MCC policies are now organized by topic, making it easier to search for a specific policy or review the collected policies associated with a topic.
5) The Policies website will be updated regularly as new policies are approved by the Board or as existing policies are revised, making these changes immediately accessible.

This last point is significant. The pace of change in higher education and the demands of external stakeholders for institutional accountability continue to escalate. MCC’s Policies website will be our 21st century “gold book,” offering essential information to you and our community and providing a responsive format in a dynamic environment.

When the pace of fall semester settles into a more regular rhythm, I hope you will share your feedback about the new policy format and website on the blog.

But, for the next couple weeks, I wish you the very best as you begin a new year with our students. Thank you for bringing your inspiration to MCC!
