Financial Aid Quick Tip: Which is better “F” or “W”?

I wish there was a simple answer to this question.  “F” grades negatively affect the grade point average and can lead to suspension.  “W” grades can result in a student incurring a financial “hit” sooner as well as later.  There are many factors that one needs to consider and no catch-all simple rule for all students.  The best general consult we give students is to avoid accumulating too many of either.  Excessive “F” and/or “W” grades result in poor academic progress.  A student that does not progress satisfactorily toward their degree loses aid eligibility.

In this case the best prescription is preventative medicine.  We can help our students avoid the F/W dilemma by reviewing course expectations early in the semester and again before the drop period ends.  Offer students study tips and strategies to help them manage time, take notes, and balance their busy lives.   Should grades begin to take a turn for the worse, I often advise students to initiate a meeting with faculty and discuss the possibility of extra credit.

When all else fails and a student finds himself having to choose between the F or W grade, he should know where he currently stands on both the federal and state progress charts on pages 31 and 33 of the MCC catalog.   For assistance in figuring out how the grade will effect present or future financial aid eligibility, contact our Brighton and Damon City Campus offices.
