Pete Pavia Tournament Recap


Monroe Community College capped another successful Pete Pavia Memorial Scholarship Basketball Tournament this weekend, with the Tribune men and women earning victories.

The men's team battled SUNY Delhi Friday night in the tournament opener. The Broncos kept things close in the first half, as the Tribunes entered the break with a 33-30 lead. Sophomore Joe Mbang then took over in the second half for MCC, hitting jump after jumper and adding a pair of slams to spur his teammates and the crowd. Mbang finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds in the 73-61 win.

Brian Addison chipped in with 14 points while Alex Owumi had 12. Point guard Joe Lindsey added seven points and 10 assists.

The women's team played it's only game of the tournament Saturday afternoon against the Community College of Rhode Island. The Tribunes led by just six at halftime but pulled away in the end for a 68-50 win.

Maurita Reid led the way with 19 points while Jenn Jones added 14.  Niki Avery scored 13 and Trenise Fuller registered a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

The tournament wrapped up on Sunday as the MCC men scored early and often in a 97-70 victory over Hagerstown CC. Kevin Draughon scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half as the Tribunes opened up a 23-point lead at the intermission. Owumi and Addison finished with 14 points apiece and Mbang added 10. Awards were handed out to Addison (Best All-Around Player), Mbang (Best Defensive Player), Owumi (Best Offensive Player), and Lindsey (Best Little Man).

The men's team improved to 3-1. Their next home game will be Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. against Cuyahoga. The women's team (2-0) don't play at home until Jan 7. Check the MCC website for scores and highlights of all games.
