Sperr Heroism, New Criminal Justice Scholarship Highlighted by Local Media

Representatives of local print and broadcast media covered yesterday's press conference at Damon City Campus. The press conference was hosted by the Monroe Community College Foundation.

At the press conference, the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police presented the parents of fallen Trooper Andrew J. Sperr (an MCC alumnus) with the Medal of Valor. New York State Police Superintendent Wayne E. Bennett attended and emphasized the importance of remembering Trooper Sperr's heroism.

Also at the press conference, the Monroe County Association of Chiefs of Police launched a new scholarship for MCC Criminal Justice students by presenting MCC President R. Thomas Flynn with a check for $2,000 in Trooper Sperr's memory. The first scholarship will be awarded, via the MCC Foundation and MCC's Law and Criminal Justice Department, next spring.

Special thanks to the MCC Foundation Director Diane Shoger for bringing county and state law enforcement leaders to Damon City Campus and to Chairman Gary Thompson and Professor David Pogue for participating in follow-up interviews to further highlight MCC's Law and Criminal Justice program.
