I’ve Met You. Latin? You Barely Speak Coherent English.

I take exception to the title of this article. I have worked here for seventeen years and take great pride in the fact that you have NOT met me. Few people have. I suppose you are flirting with poetic license. Please stop.

Since my Friday Tribune article on withdrawals, many people have emailed me expressing surprise at my uncanny ability with a Latin phrase. Obviously, there are some who underestimate the knowledge needed to maintain the college’s grading records and to schedule classrooms. This is not a job for the faint of heart or the poorly educated. We in the Registrar’s Office often exchange barbs in Latin during the course of our everyday duties. We are no different than you.

In addition to comments on my Latin skills I have also received some questions regarding withdrawals. Actually I have received a lot of questions. I will try to deal with them during the course of the week. I hate to leave anyone uninformed. (Translation: I like to tell people what to do; I am an oldest child.)

Q: What can we, as faculty, do to make the withdrawal process easier for you? (I submitted this one myself! Clever, huh?)
A: Get all your withdrawals done by April 18th AND remember to input the last date of attendance for each withdrawal.

Q: Why is the last date of attendance so important for a withdrawal?
A: Financial Aid must be re-evaluated for any student who did not successfully complete a course. The last date of attendance is essential information for the financial aid evaluation. It’s easy to input this date when you give the student a “W”. It’s a bit of a project when you don’t input the date and then we have to track it down and input it manually for each student. We really love it when you don’t forget this vital bit of information!

Q: So if we forget the last date of attendance you won’t just let it go?
A: We can’t. We are required by the sacred R&R Oath to hound you to the ends of the earth and beyond for this crucial piece of information.  If you don’t want us barging in your home (with a video camera!) at an inopportune time, remember to include the last date of attendance with all your withdrawals.

More Q and A coming…

Remember! The withdrawal deadline for spring is approaching. You may withdraw students online through Saturday, April 18, 11:59 p.m.

Sane ego te vocavi. Forsitan capedictum tuum desit.
