Welcome to the New Teaching and Creativity Center Coordinator

Please join Academic Services in welcoming Gena Merliss to the role of TCC coordinator.  Gena earned a Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania, spent time as a secondary school science teacher, and served as the Supervisor of Placements and Professional Development at Tufts University before joining MCC in 2008.  Gena considers herself a generalist and has taught both language and math transitional studies courses.  These experiences well-position her to support faculty from all disciplines.  Gena is an exemplary colleague who spends time outside of the classroom working with her peers to share expertise through professional development and has been an active participant in our Teaching and Creativity Center since she joined the College.  She is the lead facilitator for our Critical Friends Groups (CFGs) aimed to engage colleagues in critical reflection of teaching practices at all stages of faculty careers.

Professor Merliss has emerged as a leader on campus in helping students learn how to learn from testing as well as increasing student motivation, independence, and self-awareness.  She has presented seminars on how students can develop metacognitive awareness and practices through test taking.  Professor Merliss also leads by championing innovation on MCC’s campus.  Most significantly, she has been a lead in our flexible paced developmental math program which is a modularized approach that allows for acceleration to prepare students more quickly for college-level work.  Stop in to welcome her personally at the first TCC event of the year.

A Primer on Growth Mindset – Wednesday September 19th at noon in the Brighton TCC.
