Auto Students Learn First-Hand About Racing Engines

Students in the General Motors’ ASEP Junior Class toured the facilities of Carl McQuillen Racing Engines on March 9 as part of their ATP 108-300 Engine Repair Class.

The tour was directed by Owner Carl McQuillen, who took the students through the large facility located in Leroy. The students were given demonstrations and explanations on each piece of the rebuilding equipment, and asked numerous questions – prompting lively, informative discussions.

Carl McQuillen Racing Engines is a facility that completes research for both Delphi and General Motors. The General Motors’ ASEP Junior Class explored the research and development Area. This area contained a variety of research equipment, CNC machines, flowbench facilities, and a fabrication area within a large machine shop.

The tour continued downstairs where the General Motors’ ASEP Junior Class observed a John Deere Engine cycled load and no load. The Chassis Dyno (1500 Hp) and the three engine dyno were used for durability testing. The students were informed that this testing will run continuously for days to test for certain parts.

The employees throughout the well-equipped shop were informative and open to the students. This experience proved valuable for the General Motors’ ASEP Junior Class as well as myself.

The tour was one of the highest quality tours I’ve participated in and the quality time that Carl McQuillen and his staff spent with each one of the students was exceptional and made the experience memorable. Many thanks go to Carl McQuillen Racing Engines.
