Many Thanks for a Successful International Education Week & Geography Awareness Week!

On behalf of the office of Global Education & International Services and MCC’s Geography program, we would like to thank all the staff, faculty and students who helped make our first-ever joint International Education Week & Geography Awareness Week collaboration a success!

In particular, we would like to thank MICHELE SKEEHAN  from the Print Shop.  Michele went above and beyond her usual hard working standard to print all the maps for our new World Maps Gallery, a permanent installation throughout the Brighton Campus featuring 16 world maps that highlight aspects of human, physical and/or geospatial geography.  All but three of these maps, and all the signage for The World Maps Gallery, were printed in house by Michele who worked incredibly hard to ensure the maps would be completed in time for International Education Week & Geography Awareness Week.  Thank you, Michele!

We also want to thank JEFF DAWLEY and LUIS RIVERA from Facilities.  They diligently worked to hang The World Maps Gallery frames, place the maps into the frames, and then finish it off with the unique gallery card signage that explains each map.  We appreciate both Jeff’s and Luis’ positive approach to their work!

Thank you, as well, to the FACULTY MEMBERS who participated in the week’s events and encouraged their students to attend.  We look forward to working with more faculty and helping them incorporate The World Maps Gallery into their curriculum.

And finally, thank you once again to the MCC FOUNDATION which sponsored The World Maps Gallery with a Strategic Planning Grant.  We wrote this grant to address the following needs: 1) students’ need to learn about world geography in inviting and engaging ways, 2) the need for World Maps Gallery curriculum and co-curriculum that will generate thought and discussion about our world, and 3) the need for prominent, visual symbols that highlight our mission to educate diverse learners within a local and global context.

Take a look at the collaborative effort that resulted in our new World Maps Gallery for yourself!  A map is attached for you to begin your exploration.
