An Upward Bound Male Excursion to Conquer New Heights

On Saturday, December 17th Upward Bound took a group of six male students to RockVentures, an 18,000 sq. foot rock climbing facility in Rochester. Every student climbed to the top of a 32 foot wall, and attempted more difficult climbs as well while AmeriCorps members Mr. Paul and Mr. Daniel provided belay support. Students also climbed a vertical obstacle course including a cargo net, wooden pole, steel cable, and a truck tire. The event provided a great opportunity for students in the M.A.R.K. (Men Advancing, Raising Knowledge) leadership group to take risks together and push themselves to conquer a fear. Mr. Daniel reflected, “One student started climbing, got scared, and totally didn’t think he could make it up the rest of the wall. But when other students started encouraging him, he finished the climb and got to the top! That’s exactly what we hope to see happen with our M.A.R.K. students.” We look forward to bringing the guys on future challenges.
