Flynn Receives Prestigious Phi Theta Kappa Award

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society will bestow a 2008 Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award on President R. Thomas Flynn.

The Lifetime Achievement Awards are presented to retiring college administrators for exemplary services rendered to Phi Theta Kappa during the course of their academic career. These retiring administrators all have a rich history of promoting the goals of Phi Theta Kappa through their support of their campus chapters and their Phi Theta Kappa regions. The awards are named for a past president of St. Petersburg Junior College.

“I believe very strongly in the Phi Theta Kappa program, which recognizes exceptional students at community colleges and provides them with additional leadership opportunities,” said President Flynn. “Working with MCC’s Phi Theta Kappa students and faculty leaders has been personally rewarding; I’m honored to accept this award.”

Flynn helped to charter the Alpha Theta Iota chapter at MCC in 1983, and he was instrumental in helping the New York region establish other chapters. With his support, the chapter has made significant contributions to the community, in the region and globally. Through the years, the chapter has received many regional and international awards, including citations for the most distinguished chapter. And in 2002, Flynn received the Shirley B. Gordon award, an honor from Phi Theta Kappa that is given to college presidents for their outstanding efforts in promoting the goals of the honor society.

Flynn will receive the award during Phi Theta Kappa’s convention April 3 to 5 in Philadelphia, Pa.
