Fall Happenings with Liberty Partnerships Program

This fall has been a busy one for Monroe Community College's LPP! We kicked off our programming this year with a trip to the Rochester Educational Opportunity Center (REOC) College Fair in October. A group of students had the opportunity to meet with representatives from different colleges across the country, as well as local education/trade opportunity programs and branches of the military.

Our next College Knowledge activity was our annual College Bound Kickoff. Parents and students in grades 9-12 were invited to come to the MCC campus to learn information about understanding their transcript, the college application and admissions process, and steps for completing the FAFSA and scholarship applications. An admissions representative from St. John Fisher College spoke to our students and their parents about their EOP program, and how to apply to EOP and HEOP programs in general. Lastly, a program counselor from MCC's admissions office explained specifically what MCC has to offer.

We have also continued our monthly College Knowledge Workshop series. Each month our academic coordinator hosts a workshop for students to learn about different aspects of the admissions process. The workshops she has hosted this fall were What College is Right for You? and our annual Scholarship Hunt. Seniors have also been meeting with our team to complete college applications and FAFSA submissions!

Our Career Exploration programming for the fall involved a trip to MCC's Public Safety Training Facility. Students interested in careers in public safety had the opportunity to tour the various simulation classrooms, the fire and police academy training areas, and even got to observe the Monroe County Emergency command center. Students were interested to see some of the agencies with seats in the room such as the Red Cross and a local food pantry.

LPP students also took the opportunity to engage with our community and give back on a half day of school. Students met at Teen Central, which is a teen space at the downtown library. Students volunteered their time cleaning books, organizing the tech lab, and working to make the space even more teen friendly. Our students then had the opportunity to test out a Library Scavenger Hunt, which the staff at Teen Central was looking to roll out for groups who visit in the future.

December welcomes some fun and relaxing activities for LPP students as we enter this busy time of year. There was a half-day event opportunity for students to come together from all four of our schools and work on vision boards, and goals for life after LPP. There were lively discussions about career aspirations as well as dream colleges. Students then enjoyed lunch and a movie afternoon. We will be wrapping up the semester with our fifth annual Winter Wonderland celebration. Students and their families are invited to campus to play games, make crafts, decorate cookies, and enjoy time with our LPP family.

We wish all LPP programs the best for the New Year, and cannot wait to see what 2020 brings to our Monroe Community College LPP family!
