In Radio Program, Phi Theta Kappa Member Discusses His Role in City School Program

Beth Adams Pitoniak, host of the weekly “Rally ‘Round Rochester” radio show, recently dedicated a half-hour discussing the Rochester City School District’s I’M READY program and an MCC student’s involvement in helping program participants succeed academically. I’M READY is an alternative learning program in which students serving long-term suspension receive personalized academic support and other services necessary to make a successful return to their home school.

In the interview, Kurt VonAllmen described his one-year experience tutoring and mentoring these students as part of a Phi Theta Kappa chapter project. He shared personal strategies on building rapport and challenging the students to grow academically. Kurt also mentioned how it was gratifying for him to see students progress in their studies and in life and offered advice to interested mentors/tutors. Kurt, a liberal arts major, is expected to graduate in June and transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Dr. Jerome Watts, principal of I’M READY, was also interviewed in the show.
