May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. We all know the importance about taking care of our health which includes eating right, getting enough sleep and exercising. Good health includes not only caring for our body, but also our mind. Mental health is an integral part to our overall health. When a person has “good” mental health, they deal better with what challenges come their way. Poor mental health can also harm a person’s physical health. Research shows stress and anxiety are closely linked to high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity. It also shows people who feel depressed may have a greater risk of physical illness. The good news is that there are many healthy choices individuals can adopt to promote and strengthen mental health and their overall health and well-being.

Counseling, International and Veteran Services is raising awareness of the role that mental health plays in our lives by providing tips and resources so that anyone can take steps to promote good mental health. The following website provides suggestions to exercise good mental health https://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/may. Look for future Tribune articles addressing other ways to promote good mental health.
