On October 25, 2001, Congress passed and President Bush signed into law the
Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to
Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA PATRIOT Act). Provisions of the law may
have significant impact on campuses, particularly their information systems.
Cornell University has taken the lead to keep the higher education community
informed of the ongoing implications of this act. One action they suggested is
that colleges review their procedures for handling requests for information and
access to technology networks for information gathering purposes.
At this point, I want to affirm MCC's procedures:
· Any request for information under the Freedom of Information Act or
Solomon Amendment, i.e. military recruiters, should be directed to Cynthia
Cooper, Director, College and Community Relations; and
· Any request for access to our electronic networks from any individuals
representing themselves as law enforcement agents should be directed to Robert
Wiesner, Director, Public Safety.
The Public Safety Office will distribute a brochure on this matter and related
issues in the near future. Thank you.
