Remembrance Event Garners Media Coverage

WROC-TV, WHEC-TV and Spectrum News 1 last week attended MCC's remembrance event memorializing victims of the racially motivated mass shooting in Buffalo. Led by the MCC Student Government Association (SGA) and Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project (HGHRP) student leaders, the event also served as a call to action for MCC members to continue promoting peace and justice on campus and in the community.

The event, held Thursday (May 19) in the Flynn Campus Center Atrium, began with remarks from SGA President Isabella DeRubeis and President Burt-Nanna. followed by the reading of names of victims and a moment of silence. A candle was lit under each image of the victims displayed.

SGA President Isabella DeRubeis said, “We want people to understand the impact that this tragedy had. We want people to know the stories and the lives of the people. We don’t want people to look at this event as just another one on the news. We want people to see the humanity that was lost because of this brutal, horrific attack.”

HGHRP President Kalina Kron said, "I really related to this. My boyfriend is Black, and it really hit home for me because I thought: What if I was in that store with him, what if we were together, and what would happen to us? It's so important to bring awareness to issues of human rights where we should be at a point where people aren't being attacked for their race."

Prioritizing diversity, equity and inclusion efforts is among the College’s top five priorities for 2021-22 and beyond.
