Health Care Community Invests in Radiologic Technology Program

A collaborative effort among local hospitals, insurers, a radiology services provider and Monroe Community College has resulted in a commitment of $624,000 over a five-year period to increase the number of graduates from MCC’s Radiologic Technology program. The effort is a direct response to the radiological technologist shortage that is impacting health care in Rochester and across the country.

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield ($200,000), Strong Health ($200,000), ViaHealth ($100,000), Unity Health System ($72,000), Preferred Care ($26,000) and IDE Radiology ($26,000) each will contribute funding over the next five years toward staffing and infrastructure support at MCC. Strong Health also will provide teaching space within Strong Memorial Hospital for fall semester classes. As a result, the number of associate degree graduates from the Radiological Technology program will increase by about 35 percent (i.e., 12 more graduates) per year.

A press conference announcing the collaboration will be scheduled in September. The program expansion will begin in September 2004; larger cohorts of graduates will begin in June 2006. At the present time, MCC graduates on average 27 radiologic technology students each year.
