Cover Story Focused on Optics Program

The cover story of the Democrat and Chronicle’s RocNext section in the Sunday (Feb. 1) edition focused on how area employers and school districts have helped revive MCC’s optical systems technology program.

Several people were quoted in the article: Dr. Javier Ayala, dean of Career Technical Education; Jim Sydor, MCC alumnus and president/owner of Stefan Sydor Optics; adjunct lecturer Ed Fess; and MCC students Justin Cushman and Michael Lang.

MCC student Patrick Durkin, who was photographed for the article, developed ties to MCC five years ago. He participated in the dual-enrollment program as a Gates Chili high school student and completed the 2012 Summer Optics Sizzler camp. In fall 2013, he enrolled full time in MCC.
