TCC: Learning Communities are a High Impact Practice - Missed Fall LC's for your students!

Yesterday's Trib announcement about Learning Communities inadvertently omitted some being offered in the fall!

MTH 099/104 - These learning communities are for students who place at level 5 or have earned a C- in a prior MTH 098 class and need a review of Elementary Algebra topics to be successful in MTH 104.

MTH 104/165 - These learning communities are a good option for students in programs requiring mathematics beyond College Algebra who are starting at level 6.

More information about these learning communities and a schedule for all of the fall learning communities, please see the attached documents.

What is a Learning Community?

An learning community is a high impact practice where the same students enroll in two (or more) classes. The classes are carefully integrated to create the caring and supportive environment where students thrive.

In many cases, one class will be designed to support the other. For example, REA 100 Reading and Thinking in Psychology will focus on the reading required in PSY 101, and on the study skills and habits of mind that students need to succeed in PSY 101.

Why should students enroll in a Learning Community?

Lots of studies have shown that students who enroll in learning communities stick with college longer and are more successful.

In many cases, students have the opportunity to complete developmental and college level coursework in the same semester, shortening their pathway to completion.

What Learning Communities are available?

The fall schedule is attached. LC's are offered at the Brighton and Downtown campuses. Look for "BL" and "CL" on the Master Schedule.
