MCC Receives State Approval as Provider of Autism Training

MCC received approval from the New York State Department of Education (NYSED) to be a state-certified provider of autism training.  New state regulations require all teachers, paraprofessionals, school administrators, and candidates applying for teaching licensure to be certified in autism training.  The training is designed to increase educators’ knowledge in understanding the needs of students with autism.

MCC joins the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities, Monroe #1 BOCES, and the Greece and West Irondequoit Central School Districts as the only sites in Rochester approved to offer this training.  Beginning fall 2011, autism training will be offered as part of the coursework in PSY 261 (Psychology of Learning and Behavioral Disorders).  Providing this training to MCC’s education students will also help facilitate transfer to four-year teacher education programs.  Questions about the training can be directed to Wanda Willard, Department of Psychology.  Dr. Willard, who wrote and submitted the application to NYSED, is MCC’s state-designated contact for autism training.
