Deliberative Dialogues Training Workshop

On behalf of the Democracy Commitment at MCC, co-coordinators, Professors Joseph Scanlon and Dina Giovanelli, invite you to participate in our Deliberative Dialogues training workshop scheduled for February 10th, 9 am-4 pm, in the Flynn Campus Center Forum (3-130) on the Brighton Campus. This workshop will introduce trainees to a range of skills and tools necessary for engaging in formal deliberative practices, particularly moderating and hosting deliberative forums. At a time of decreasing social trust and increasing partisan polarization, deliberative practices promote conversation that seeks to identify common ground among those with competing perspectives. The goal of the project is to discover a more participatory form of politics grounded in a culture of deliberation.

The workshop trainers are Dr. John Thies, professor of political science at the Lone Star College-Kingwood, and Alberto Olivas, executive director of the Arizona State University Congressman Ed Pastor Center for Politics & Public Service. Meals and refreshments will be provided.

Upon completion of training, each participant will be given a certificate for their participation. They will also have a chance to participate as moderators for a community  discussion late in the Spring 2017 term. Please note that space is limited.  We encourage participation from students, faculty, staff, and administration.   Student participants will be entered into a drawing for a $100 Visa gift card at the end of training.  For more information, or to express interest in participation, please contact Professor Dina Giovanelli <mailto:dgiovanelli@monroecc.edu)>  or Joseph Scanlon <mailto:jscanlon1@monroecc.edu)> .
