Department of Education Hosts Future Teachers Conference

On Thursday, Nov. 05, 2009, the MCC Dept of Education and “Today’s Students, Tomorrow’s Teachers” (TSTT) co-sponsored a Technology Conference at the MCC Brighton Campus for 70 high school students and their faculty advisors.  An article highlighting the conference appeared on Nov 6th in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, “Conference Emphasizes Need for Technology in Classroom.”  <<https://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20091106/NEWS01/911060338/1003/NEWS0>>

The Technology Conference was attended by students from area school districts, including RCSD, Victor, East Irondequoit, West Irondequoit, Brighton, Wheatland-Chili, Sodus, Greece, Brockport and Rush Henrietta. These future teachers attended seminars and listened to speakers who stressed that technology can be used in a variety of ways to enhance student learning.  Students learned about the use of “Lego Robotics in the Classroom” during the interactive presentation by MCC Department of Education STEP Coordinator Donna Augustine.  Presenter Karen Finter, Director of the W. Irondequoit Teaching Learning Center, provided students with the opportunity to experience “Thinkfinity,” a Verizon program that provides teachers and students with the opportunity to search for websites that are grade level appropriate and meet NYS teaching standards.

The MCC Department of Education has partnered with TSTT, a career development program, to provide academic advisement and career counseling to the MCC education majors who are members of TSTT.  TSTT is a non-profit organization that recruits and mentors economically challenged and culturally diverse high school students who aspire to become teachers.   Student members of TSTT are eligible to receive up to 50% off tuition when they transfer to certain 4 year colleges, including St. John Fisher College, Nazareth College and Roberts Wesleyan College.
