Newly-Inducted Honor Society Member Spotlighted

Paige Griffin started taking MCC classes part time when she was 12 while being homeschooled. Now 15, she is one of the youngest students ever to be inducted into MCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

She was spotlighted on Channel 13 (WHAM-TV) and Time Warner Cable News on Sunday, May 3, the day of the PTK induction ceremony:

A straight-A college student who lives in Fairport, Paige has two classes remaining before she will graduate from MCC. She plans to earn an associate degree in liberal arts and sciences-general studies in spring 2016. Her aspiration is to become a virtuoso violinist.

“MCC opened my eyes to how many things I can be myself. It’s expanded my world,” Paige said. “The teachers are amazing. They devote so much time to the students. I would go to office hours to talk about a math problem, and we’d end up talking about where I’d be going next after MCC.”

“We have really stayed hands off. I have not gone into her classes with her from the get-go,” said Paige’s mother, Ginny. “It makes me happy that she has grown intellectually and socially since she’s been at MCC.”

MCC’s PTK membership is the highest in upstate New York and second highest in New York state. Current chapter membership is 436 strong and represents the full diversity of the college community. Nearly 200 MCC students joined in spring 2015.

Many thanks to Jodi Oriel, Brighton Campus advisor of MCC’s PTK chapter Alpha Theta Iota, for bringing Paige to our attention and to Professors Nyerges and Fisher for making it possible for the media to film in the music room.
