The 2013 Model United Nations Team Once Again Honors MCC as a Global Competitor

William Shakespeare wrote, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” While the young men and women of Model UN may be pretending, they are also learning to “act” effectively on the world stage. By increasing their knowledge of international affairs, diversity, expanding their worldview and developing vital leadership skills, Model UN delegates are preparing to make a very real impact in the world.  Once again our students have met the challenge of competing and representing MCC at the National Collegiate Conference in New York City.

This year our team represented the country of Greece. The students sat on the General Assembly 1st, 2nd and 4th committees, Development Program committee, Trade and Development committee, International Atomic Energy Agency and the Population Fund committee (which addresses child marriage and its impact on girls, Youth poverty and the prevalence of HIV/AIDs and reproductive health in sub-Saharan Africa).

After one week of debate, negotiations, intensive writing and using their leadership skills, our college received the Honorable Mention Award at the conference.  Two of our delegate students, (Yanbing Wei and Christopher Dodds) who sat on the United Nations Development Program Committee received special recognition from their individual committee as the most outstanding delegates.

On the behalf of the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development, and the Model United Nations faculty, we would like to congratulate these students for a job well done.  If any of these students are in your class, or if you know them personally, please take the time to congratulate them for all of their hard work.

Model UN is a transformative experience that deepens participants’ understanding of the world and their place within it.  Delegates emerge from Model UN with open minds, fresh ideas and new ways of looking at  the world. With the skills they develop in speaking, writing, negotiating, leadership and diplomacy, it is no surprise that many go on to become community and world leaders.

I personally would like to thank everyone who supports this program and our students for their contributions that make MCC stand out from other community colleges.
