MCC CSTEP Hosts STEP Students for STEM Shadow Day

On Thursday, November 17, the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) hosted 30 high school seniors from the Rochester Academy Charter School STEP program as part of the CSTEP STEM Shadow Day.  The STEP students attended classes with 16 CSTEP students and were taken on a college tour led by Autumn Pollock, one of MCC’s Peer Leaders.  The STEP students also participated in a network lunch followed by a panel facilitated by CSTEP students.

CSTEP and STEP students were “matched” based on the STEP student’s career interest.  The CSTEP staff would like to thank Professors Christine Forde (Computer Science),  Christopher Wendtland (Biology), Charles Wuertzer (Biology), Azwana Sadique (Chemistry and Geosciences),  Michael Boester (Chemistry and Geosciences), Albert Knebel, (Engineering Science and Physics),  Environmental Science Adrian Smalls (Law/Criminal Justice) who gave permission for the STEP students to attend their classes.

Many kudos to the current CSTEP students and MCC faculty for making this event a success!  STEP students shared through a survey that this event had a meaningful impact on their lives and that it significantly increased their interest to attend MCC.

Funded by the New York State Education Department, the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) seeks to increase the number of historically underrepresented or economically disadvantaged students pursuing careers leading to professional licensure or professions in mathematics, science, technology and health-related fields.
