MCC mourns the loss of Barbara A. Degen, who retired as an executive secretary in the Office of the President in 1998. According to her obituary, Ms. Degen passed away peacefully on November 25, 2021. A funeral mass and celebration of her life were held earlier this month.

She is predeceased by her husband Harold D. Degen. She is survived by her children Peter Degen, David (Heidi) Degen, Kenneth (Barb) Degen and Penny (Brian) Ferrante; nieces; nephew; sisters; grandchildren; great grandchildren and dear friends.

A member of CSEA, Ms. Degen joined MCC as a clerk-typist in 1976. She was promoted to Clerk 2 with Typing and Clerk I in 1980 and 1981, respectively. In 1984, she was promoted to an administrative assistant. During her MCC career she also served as an executive secretary in the Administrative Services Division and Office of the President (Middle States and Internal Audit). She was known for her excellent knowledge of the college, the quality of her work, and her positive outlook. She served on search committees and contributed to grant-related efforts. She retired after more than 20 years of service.

In lieu of flowers or monetary donations, her family asked that “you give the gift of your time. On behalf of Barbara A. Degen, volunteer or spend time with someone you have not seen in a while or with someone that is elderly and/or lonely.”
