Gena Merliss and Kimberley Collins present at AAC&U's Annual Meeting

On January 21st, Gena Merliss (Teaching and Creativity Center) and Kimberley Collins (Academic Services) presented at AAC&U's 2022 Annual Meeting. Their presentation, Connecting Faculty Development with Student Outcomes: a Community College’s Program Evaluation Research,” built on the strong history of the First Year and Second Year Faculty Series, the CARE practices study and professional learning led by Jason Anderson, Lydia Tien and Jason Szymanski, as well as Gena’s 2021-2022 leave for professional advancement.   The description of the presentation is below.

Community college faculty development centers face particular challenges when asked to assess the impact of our programming on faculty’s teaching practice and student outcomes. Not only is this level of assessment the growing edge of the faculty development field with limited models, but we may lack personnel to devote to program evaluation as well as research expertise. In this research session, learn how our center worked with administrators to begin developing a sustainable and robust assessment project of a two-year mandatory new faculty series by building capacity for research. Our analytical framework was grounded in a previous on-campus study of teaching practices that promote student retention at our large community college. We will share our data collection measurements, preliminary data and analysis, triumphs, challenges, and next steps. Our intention is to share a work in progress, warts and all, in hopes that it will benefit our collective thinking about assessment.

We plan to complete this program evaluation in the spring, and are currently recruiting tenure track faculty in their first 5 years at MCC.
