Kudos to DCC Visiting Scholars and Campus Life Engagement Committees

The Damon Executive Leadership Team hosted a reception at DCC on May 4 for the faculty and staff who served on the DCC Visiting Scholars and DCC Campus Life Engagement committees, as well as the local scholars who came to campus to give presentations this spring semester.

Much deserved congratulations to Campus Life Engagement Committee members Etienne Blaakman, Sandy Chamberlain, Julie Damerell, Paula Fahy and Janet Waasdorp; and to Visiting Scholars Committee members Sandy Chamberlain, Toni Custodio, Paula Fahy, James Maley, Christine Plumeri and Janet Waasdorp.

The Visiting Scholars Committee was charged with developing educational campus life programs supporting the mission of the college and the Visiting Scholars Series. Programs include Somaly Mam, author of “The Road of Lost Innocence” (one of the co-sponsors for the program), and “The Journey of an MCC Student and Professional Artist” featuring MCC alumnus Shawn Dunwoody.

The Campus Life Engagement Committee was responsible for developing campus life programs to engage the campus community and provide opportunities to bring the DCC campus community together. Programs include Collaboration with Writers & Books, an interactive writing experience led by Writers & Books instructor Wendy Low using guided meditation and prose, and Thom Ward, a well-known poet and editor of BOA Editions. Ward read poetry and shared ideas with students about poetry, reading and writing. He has written numerous poetry books, his last two titled “Various Orbits” and “The Matter of the Casket.”

Other campus life engagement programs included a scavenger hunt and department social.  Additionally, a campus-wide social provided students an opportunity to learn about fall 2010 class offerings, assistance with academic advisement and financial aid, and a chance to meet faculty.

A total of approximately 805 students, faculty and staff attended the programs – an incredible turnout and a superb job by all.

During the May 4 reception, attendees also brainstormed ideas for the next academic year. If you have ideas for programs that would enhance the student learning experience through engagement and scholarly programs, please contact Rick Sadwick, associate director in DCC Student Services.
