MCC's Virtual Remembrance of 9/11 Attacks Covered by Media

WHEC-TV, WROC-TV, Spectrum News and WXXI AM News reported on the College's September 11 commemoration, held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mark Sample, associate professor of history at MCC, delivered the keynote address, "Unity Through Crisis: A History of Hope," on how notable tragedies in the U.S. within the past century united and strengthened the nation.

"We are not facing today just one tragedy or crisis, but many," Sample said. "Health issues, social problems, political firestorm. America is suffering again."

"We can overcome these problems," he said. "And a better tomorrow will instead become a better today."

Sample '92, an alumnus, has taught history at MCC since 2001. His course covers the history of the United States from the post-Civil War period to the present.

Emcee for the event was Bryce Gernon, interim president of the Brighton Campus Student Government Association. A second-year computer science student whose birthday falls on Sept. 28, Gernon is among this year's MCC freshmen and sophomores who were born in 2001.

Prior to the virtual event, Gernon shared with an MCC member how he came to understand the significance of 9/11: "I learned about 9/11 from my parents, after asking about a 9/11 memorial I saw. I did further research on my own from there, watching recordings and reading about the attack and its impacts."

During this year's commemoration, Gernon said it is "the first time the event has been emceed by a student who has not been born when the 9/11 attacks happened."

"While I and many in my generation may not remember the attacks or indeed have been alive during them, we still learn, watch and feel their impact," he said. "Let us work together to embrace that same spirit of hope and unity, which came out of this 19 years ago."
